Audio Note Oto Review

We have been championing all things Audio Note in the UK for quite a number of years now. It once seemed a well kept secret, however the secret is well and truly getting out there. It seems not a week goes by now without someone singing the praises of Audionote. This time, Jeff Day, reviewer from Jeff’s Place, has been to visit Audio Note themselves in Brighton, to have a good discussion with Andy Grove (Audionote’s Senior Engineer), and had the chance to take a close look at the legendary “Oto” integrated amplifier.

In response to Jeff’s visit to Audio Note, he received a message from none other than famed Mastering Engineer – Steve Hoffman – who said “I use an Audio Note (UK) Ltd Oto Phono SE Signature in my studio. It’s amazing, especially for the money, a really nice EL-84 unit that does it all.” – and we couldn’t agree more! The Audio Note Oto amplifier simply plays music! In a completely effortless way, which most other amplifiers just cannot do. We have found that once you get into Audio Note, the gear starts to disappear, and in it’s place the musicians start to appear, and perform real LIVE music in your room! It quite simply cannot be described, you have to hear it for yourself!

Winter Warmers at Audiocounsel

Over the last 35 years we have been on a musical journey to uncover the best systems around, from very affordable systems to the highest levels of performance.

In the last 10 years our journey has taken us away from the mainstream brands into the world of low powered valve amplifiers and high efficiency speakers. If the job of a HiFi System is to deliver music that is as faithful to the original sound of instruments as possible then these systems deliver that like no others.

Many customers have joined us on this journey and are experiencing music like they have never heard from their system, vinyl and CD collections. We would like to share our experiences with you. During the month of January we would like to invite you along to the shop to experience these systems.

Audio Note

We will be running two very special workshops per day 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm on January 18th and 19th (Saturday and Sunday).

Peter Qvortrup and his son Daniel Qvortrup will be our very special guests during the course of the weekend. Peter’s insights into the world of Hi-Fi are always fascinating, and he will be presenting a short talk in each session. We will be playing an entry level Zero system as well as a more sophisticated Audio Note system. The incredible new Audio Note TT3 turntable will be in action, which is simply the best turntable we have heard to date! For those of you who are already familiar with the world of Audio Note, there will be the all new 4300E valves and the stunning new Meishu Tonmeister available to listen to!

Audio Note has become a big part of our business. They produce some of the most natural and realistic presentation of music that we have ever heard from a Hi-Fi System. Come along and experience this for yourselves. We will be showcasing a range of analogue and digital sources on a variety of Audio Note equipment.

Audio Note Cobra

We have been championing all things Audio Note in the UK for quite a number of years now. It once seemed a well kept secret, however the secret is well and truly getting out there. We are happy to announce that the wonderful new Audio Note Cobra has arrived at Audio Counsel.

It is the latest integrated amplifier from Audio Note. The Cobra produces 28 watts per channel from a pair of EL34 valves operating in Class A push-pull. It is capable of driving a wide variety of ‘speakers thanks to its exceptional double C-core output transformers. The exceptional double C-core output transformers are custom designed and manufactured by Audio Note (UK).

The Cobra is equipped with three analogue stereo inputs, and an additional three digital inputs, via the onboard DAC. The digital coax inputs can accept signals up to 24-bit/176.4kHz (native bit-depth for the Philips TDA1543 D/A converter chip is 16bit, so anything above this is truncated down). The Optical SPDIF input can accept signals up to 24-bit/96kHz (see above). The USB input can accept up to 16-bit/48kHz.

CoronaVirus and Audio Counsel

We understand this is a difficult time for a lot of people. However, staying in for weeks at a time and listening to records, CDs and streaming…… it is kind of our thing!

Music is incredibly powerful, and it might be a really good way to entertain a lot of people. See it as a chance to dig out those albums you’ve been meaning to give a “proper” listen. We are still open, and if you’re feeling like music is a welcome distraction, give us a call or an email. We know many will be apprehensive about physical interaction at this time, but please be assured we can still arrange a courier’s next day delivery to your door, and we are happy to remain vigilant around you in the shop. Audio Note Meishu Tonmeister

There is Beauty in Simplicity. … Take a breath and remember that simple is beautiful.

Audio Counsel are really pleased to announce the arrival of the stunning new Audio Note Meishu Tonmeister.

Heres what the boys from Audio Note have to say about the new Meishu …

We have learned through developing the 211 amplifiers, each element in a circuit is like each lens in a microscope. It has to be perfectly chosen and formed to correctly work with the proceeding and following lenses (or stages in the amplifier circuit).

If the lenses in a microscope are not correctly chosen and adjusted, the image becomes blurred, and detail and information is lost. The same is true for an amplifier circuit. If each stage is not absolutely correctly chosen and matched to work optimally with the rest of the amplifier, the result will be blurred, unfocused, uneven sound lacking in information.

Simplify …

So to create a better amplifier, the natural idea was to simplify the circuit and optimise every element. So the combination works seamlessly and harmoniously together. This is exactly what we have done with the MEISHU Tonmeister.

The new PSU uses only one mains transformer, one 5U4 rectifier valve and one choke. When this arrangement is optimised, it works extremely well. It produces a very homogeneous and ‘complete’ sound.

Audio Note Meishu Tonmeister

The input and driver stage is very similar to that found in the JINRO, TOMEI and ONGAKU. It has a 12AU7 and 5687 driving an in-house designed and manufactured inter-stage transformer for the best energy transfer, evenness and authority. This is the most important, fundamental upgrade over the original design.

The output transformers for the new MEISHU were designed specifically for the project by Andy Grove, and it is not an overstatement to say that they are superb.

The circuit is now a beautiful example of elegant simplification. Something that could only be realised thanks to our ability to create extremely closely matched transformers in-house, and having our own supply of custom resistors, in-house made foil capacitors and custom made electrolytic capacitors. These allow us to exert extremely tight control over the performance and voicing of the complete amplifier from input to output. This is something that is simply beyond the possibilities of manufacturers who have to rely on ‘off the shelf’ components.

The result is an amplifier that maintains the legendary Audio Note musicality, midrange magic and glorious tonal colour of the original MEISHU. The Tonmeister brings new and previously unheard levels of information retrieval and dynamic expression, redefining what is usually expected of a 300B SET amplifier.

We've Been developing something special....

New Adventures in stands….

Whilst the rest of the UK were in lockdown, we were busy listening to lots of music, just for a change. Something dawned on us……

Our Mission…

Anyone can just plug in a new amplifier, or a new pair of speakers – but – in the four decades we’ve been doing this we’ve learnt how to put a system together in order to absolutely maximise the performance of each piece of equipment!

This is one of the reasons we install everything we sell, we want to know that your purchase is performing to the very best it can do. This takes time, attention to detail and an experienced ear.

Our Newest Development.

We’ve taken a closer look at every aspect of a system than we’ve ever done before.

Something came up……metal speaker stands.

They are what we’ve been used to. It got us thinking, lots of metal doesn’t work well in a Hi-Fi rack, so why would lots of metal underneath your speaker work so well? Maybe, just maybe it doesn’t?

This has led us to designing and manufacturing our very own new loudspeaker stands!! We have our pre-production prototype speaker stands already on permanent demonstration which you’re very welcome to come listen to, and we expect to receive our finished stands in the next few weeks.

The all new speaker stands aren’t specifically designed to work for any one brand of loudspeakers, however they are perfect for Audio Note loudspeakers, specifically the AN/Ks, AN/Js and AN/Es. So far we have ran product tests with a few dozen customers who own Audio Note speakers and their reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. But don’t take our word for it, don’t even take our customer’s words for it……come and put them to the test yourself!

Did you know, last year, vinyl sold in greater numbers than at the height of the 1970’s? The vinyl revival is here. I guess it never went way for us, but that’s another matter.

The point is, we listen to a lot of vinyl, on a lot of different turntables – but nothing has ever come close to the sound of Audio Note’s TT3 which was released last year. But, we have some news…….

After several years in research & development the flagship Audio Note TT3 finally arrived last year – including the option of three different power supplies (The PSU1, PSU2 or PSU3). It sounds INCREDIBLE!

So, earlier this year, we ran a series of workshops at Audiocounsel with Audio Note’s heart & soul Peter & Daniel Qvortrup as our special guests, as well as one of their senior designer’s Darko Greguras where we explored all things Audio Note – and Darko left the event so inspired by our passion for music, he called us a few weeks later having come up with the PSU4 power supply!

We we’re honoured to be sent the first version of it – and we have it available to demo to you now!

Okay….we know…..it doesn’t look like a finished product in some of these photos – but we have the final prototype here – the finished product looks bloomin’ lovely, and just like the the other power supplies it is available in either Black Acrylic or Anodised Aluminium.

Crucially, this new PSU-4 sounds utterly unbelievable and, well, you just need to hear it for yourself…….Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the highest level we have heard vinyl perform at! And it’s not the highest level of cost either!! It’s worth making a special trip to come see us and have a listen to this!

We know one or two things about how to put a good Hi-Fi system together. So during the last lockdown, we were busy at what we do best – getting the absolute most out of your hi-fi system, and maximising your enjoyment of music! Whilst we weren’t allowed to do demos at the shop, we were still able to install lots of exciting new products. Have a little look here…..

Audio Note Conquest.

Only this week, we installed a pair of Audio Note Conquest 300B Mono power amplifiers for a customer who was very happy indeed! This whole system was playing any genre of music you could throw at it, with such real life presence it was hard to believe the musicians weren’t performing in the room!

What can we say about this particular install? It wasn’t as good as attending a live gig – it was probably even better! One of our top customers, Stuart, slotted in an M6 Phono into an already stunning system. After a little bit of playing around we could barely bring ourselves to stop listening to record after record!!

Devore Fidelity

We are delighted to introduce Devore Fidelity loudspeakers to our selective range of loudspeakers. A beautifully designed and crafted range of speakers which perfectly compliment valve amplification! (Which, if we hadn’t already mentioned, we’re quite big fans of!) It’s safe to say, we listen to a lot of speaker brands – but these have really grabbed us. They work out in the room, as well as against walls and in corners. We can’t wait to play these to you!

It’s an extremely well-crafted loudspeaker that achieves a combination of strengths that is, as far as I know, unique. For the majority of 2021, we were unfortunately still under restrictions, which sadly meant our regular monthly music club didn’t get back up and running until the last third of the year. So whilst they are simply the best on the market today, unfortunately like many manufacturers of late, their build costs have increased, which will see a rise in retail price of around 10%. This will come into effect on January 31st 2022. Any orders placed before this date will be honoured at the old price, so don’t hang around!

Audiocounsel at North West Audio Show 2023

North-West Audio Show at Cranage Hall….

We are delighted to be heading back to The North West Audio Show at Cranage Hall on Sat 17th June and Sun 18th June 2023. It is a great place to listen to a wide range of products you wouldn’t ordinarily get the chance to hear – and our room at the show (The Curie Suite) will be no exception, with us featuring TWO different systems this year………

We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a very special Audio Note event on Thursday 14th December, here at Audiocounsel.

We will be honoured to have Micky Seaton from Audio Note in attendance at this event, and he has promised to bring along some very exciting new things up from the factory to entertain you all with!

This will be a special one-day event. We expect places to fill up very quickly, so be sure to email or call us to reserve your place.

Workshop times….

We will be running TWO Audio Note workshops throughout the day. You are welcome to book in for either the morning or the afternoon session:

The morning session is 10am -12.30pm
The afternoon session is 1.30pm – 4pm
